How To Be A Successful Blogger

Success can be defined in many ways. How do we determine success as a blogger? Is it blog traffic? Is it income from your blog?

What is the metric that defines a blogger’s success?

For the purpose of this article, let us define blog success as income from the blog. The reason I use income as a metric is because there is no objective way to judge the value of content.

Top bloggers are consistently earning income from their blogs. I consider a blog successful when it starts to make at least $100,000 per year.

Using this as a metric to success, how does one become a successful blogger?

Here is my analysis of successful bloggers:

#1 Consistent Habits

To become a successful blogger, one needs to develop successful habits. I see people with the knowledge and expertise to become successful bloggers, but they do not have the discipline to be successful.

Successful bloggers spend at least one hour a day blogging. They don’t just blog when they feel like, but they blog every single day of the year. If you blog every weekday of the year (with a two-week vacation during the year), that is 250 days. If you can write even 300 words a day, that is 75,000 words a year. If you do this consistently for ten years, it’s 750,000 words.

Successful bloggers look at blogging as a long-term project, a marathon, not a sprint to the finish line, because there is no finish line.

#2 Average to Above Average Writing Skills

It goes without saying that blogging requires good writing skills. Your writing skills don’t need to be at a Ph.D. level. But simple high school English that is conversational and easy to read is good enough.

#3 Knowledge about SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Knowledge about onpage and offpage SEO is essential. Search engines are the primary source of traffic for many successful blogs.
Being able to optimize your blog for search engines has the potential to bring in a lot of organic traffic from search engines.

#4 Knowing how to build a fan base

Online marketing is a vast field. Search engines, social media platforms, and other blogs bring in traffic. Bloggers need to understand their traffic sources. Publishing great content is terrific but getting people to read the content is much harder.

#5 Basic technical knowledge (about WordPress)

You don’t need to be an expert software developer. I don’t consider myself to be tech savvy at all. You only need a basic understanding of WordPress, and its plugins. If you do not want to handle the technical stuff, you can hire someone to help you with the technical side of things.

#6 Strategy that makes money

You’ve chosen a high demand niche, written great content, promoted your content like crazy; now you are getting a lot of traffic to your blog. Then, what is the problem? Well, no revenues! Your blog isn’t making you money.

Why?

Most successful blogs are generating income from affiliate marketing, selling their own digital products, or through memberships. If you are not relying on either of these three sources, then you might be struggling to earn a healthy income from your blog.

If advertising revenue is your only source of income, then you might struggle to get rich from your blogging income.

Explore sources of revenue like affiliate marketing, or converting your blog into a membership site.

#7 Providing value

The purpose of blogging is to benefit your readers. What is the primary objective (or mission) of your blog? Why does your blog exist?

The purpose of Blogger Hangout is to help people earn an income from blogging. All the content we write on our blog is aligned with this mission.

Every time you write an article, ask yourself, does this article fulfill the mission of my blog?

Conclusion

Many people want to get rich quick. Nothing wrong with that! But blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes several years of hard work to become a successful blogger. If you are not willing to invest at least a few hours a day for two years or more, then blogging is not for you.
